When Heath Ledger tragically passed away at the age of 28 years old, The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan was in the midst of post-production,

This meant — as Nolan put it in a recently uncovered tribute to the late, great Ledger — he had to see Heath’s face virtually every day, week, and month after his passing.

In a piece published by Newsweek, Nolan remembered Ledger by telling an anecdote that highlighted his almost otherworldly charisma and unrivaled dedication to his craft.

“One night, as I’m standing on LaSalle Street in Chicago, trying to line up a shot for The Dark Knight, a production assistant skateboards into my line of sight. Silently, I curse the moment that Heath first skated onto our set in full character makeup,” Nolan’s remembrance begins.

“I’d fretted about the reaction of Batman fans to a skateboarding Joker, but the actual result was a proliferation of skateboards among the younger crew members. If you’d asked those kids why they had chosen to bring their boards to work, they would have answered honestly that they didn’t know. That’s real charisma—as invisible and natural as gravity. That’s what Heath had.”

After further detailing Heath’s professionalism and fervent commitment to his craft, Nolan — the storyteller that he is — comes back around to reveal that the skateboarding PA was actually Ledger, who had come to set on his night off to learn more about how the film was being made.

“Back on LaSalle Street, I turn to my assistant director and I tell him to clear the skateboarding kid out of my line of sight when I realize—it’s Heath, woolly hat pulled low over his eyes, here on his night off to take me up on my offer. I can’t help but smile.”

Another incredible tribute to Ledger came from fellow iconic actor Daniel Day-Lewis when he was accepting the SAG Award for his work in There Will Be Blood.

As Nolan details in the piece, he felt a responsibility to do right by Ledger while editing the movie, and he certainly delivered as Ledger posthumously won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his work in the film, making him the first actor to ever be awarded for a performance in a comic book movie.

Furthermore, more than 15 years after the film’s release, The Dark Knight is still considered to be one of the greatest movies of the century, if not of all time.

Rest in Peace, Heath. Your loss remains seismic, even all these years later.
